Why take the Stick to 6 Challenge?

Excess dietary sodium is the single biggest cause of high blood pressure, increasing our risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attack and stroke. 1 in 4 adults in the UK suffer from high blood pressure, and many people aren’t even aware they have it.

The main source of sodium in our diet is salt. In the UK, only 1 in 10 people know that the maximum recommended intake of salt per day is 6g. That’s equal to around 1 teaspoon – which isn’t really a lot is it?

With so much salt present in the pre-packaged foods we regularly buy (like bread, cereals, sauces, etc.), we should be mindful of how much we are using at home and adding to our meals when eating out.

The Rise of Secret Salt

At the moment, the average adult in the UK consumes around 8.4g salt a day – around 40% higher than the recommended maximum…so how are we consuming so much?

Well you’d be surprised how much salt is lurking in some of your favourite foods – from sliced bread to chain restaurant classics. For instance, did you know that 3 out of 4 plant-based meat alternatives exceed salt targets – quite concerning for those who have adopted a plant-based lifestyle for the sake of ‘health’.

That’s why tracking the food you eat with Nutracheck is great, it helps you manage your salt intake!
